Worked example – step by step

Say someone was born on 15 March 1990 and today is 10 July 2025.

1. Years: From March 1990 to March 2025 = 35 full years. The birthday in 2025 falls on 15 March, which has already passed by 10 July. So the year count is 35.
2. Months: From 15 March 2025 to 15 July 2025 would be 4 months, but we only reach 10 July – so the 4th month isn't complete. Count from 15 March → 15 June = 3 full months, landing on 15 June 2025.
3. Days: From 15 June 2025 to 10 July 2025 = 25 days.
4. Result: 35 years, 3 months, 25 days.

How the age calculation works

The formula in plain words: subtract the birth date from today's date, counting complete calendar units (years first, then months, then leftover days).

Age = (Today's Year − Birth Year)
      − 1 if the birthday hasn't occurred yet this year

Remaining months = months between the birthday
                   and today (same rule)

Remaining days   = days between the last
                   'month boundary' and today

The borrow rule (what trips people up)

If today's day number is smaller than the birth day, you can't subtract cleanly. You borrow one month, add its length in days, then subtract. This is the same idea as borrowing in long subtraction.

Example: Born 28 February, today is 10 February 2025. The current day (10) is less than the birth day (28), so borrow January's 31 days: 10 + 31 = 41 days since 28 January → 41 − 28 = 13 remaining days, and the month count drops by 1. The same borrow logic applies when the birth month is later than the current month in a year.
